The Golden Thread Taskforce
Connecting the dots so buildings stay safe for real people, not just on paper.
The Golden Thread Taskforce (GTTF) is a group of people who got tired of hearing, “We thought the information was there…” after something had already gone wrong.
We’re designers, fire engineers, asset managers, digital folks, contractors and product specialists who’ve all seen the same problem from different angles:
no one has the same, trusted, up-to-date picture of what’s actually in a building and how it’s meant to keep people safe.
So we decided to fix that together.
What’s the “Golden Thread” anyway?
The Golden Thread is the idea that key information about a building – especially life safety stuff like fire doors, dampers, alarms, smoke control, compartmentation – should:
- be complete (not half-missing in someone’s inbox)
- be connected (not scattered across ten systems and three spreadsheets)
- be kept alive for the whole life of the building, not just at handover
In theory, everyone agrees with this. In practice, it’s messy, confusing and often left until it’s too late.
That’s where we come in.
So what does the Taskforce actually do?
We do two big things:
1. We agree what “good” looks like
We work across the industry to pin down a sensible, repeatable minimum for safety-critical information.
Not hundreds of pointless fields nobody can deliver – just the stuff that really matters:
- What is the asset?
- Where exactly is it?
- What is it protecting?
- What product is it, and is it tested for that use?
- Who installed, commissioned and maintains it?
- What’s changed since then?
Then we turn that into clear, usable guidance that clients and project teams can actually follow.
2. We help people make it real
We’re not just a talking shop. Taskforce members get involved in real projects:
- turning surveys and scans into usable asset information
- checking if Gateway 2/3 and Reg 38 information is actually complete
- helping different bits of software talk to each other
- joining the dots between BIM models, asset lists, fire strategies and site reality
Think of us as a set of specialist problem-solvers you can bring in when the digital and safety jigsaw pieces just won’t fit.
Why this matters
At the end of all the acronyms and regulations are people who live, work and sleep in these buildings.
If the information is wrong, missing or scattered, it’s harder to manage risk, harder to respond in an emergency, and harder for duty holders to prove they’re doing the right thing.
The Golden Thread Taskforce exists so that:
- residents get safer buildings
- clients and landlords know where they stand
- project teams aren’t guessing what’s needed
- digital information finally earns its keep
Want to get involved?
Whether you’re wrestling with a specific project, curious about our baseline, or think your skills could plug into the Taskforce, we’d love to talk.
This is a collective effort. We’re here to connect the threads – people, data, systems and buildings – so safety isn’t left to chance.
